On July 25, in Quang Nam province, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam coordinated with the Department of Tourism of Da Nang and the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue organized a survey and workshop to link the development of green tourism in 3 localities in the region of Quang Nam – Da Nang – Thua Thien Hue.

Recently, in the area of Da Nang city, a number of models of community tourism, agricultural tourism have been formed.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, stated that the collaboration for the development of green tourism among the three localities is a practical action to effectively implement the guidance of the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1658/QD-TTg dated October 1, 2021, on the national strategy for green growth in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050

“For Quang Nam, we have identified the development of green tourism as a crucial task in our tourism development strategy . The provincial People’s Committee has issued the Criteria for Green Tourism in Quang Nam, which is the first set of green tourism criteria in Vietnam covering six areas: hotels, resorts, homestays, travel companies, community-based tourism sites, and tourist attractions,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong.

After nearly 2 years of implementation, along with the agreement and support of the business community and localities, the tourism industry in Quang Nam province has been undergoing very positive transformations on the path to eco-friendly tourism products. Currently, there are many tourism products/models that businesses are interested in investing in, such as eco-friendly accommodation combined with traditional cultural experiences, village and craft tourism, and community-based tourism.

Local residents actively participate in various local tourism activities, contributing to the creation of tourism products with high educational value, such as waste recycling, incorporating clean and organic agriculture into tourism products to create an ecological tourism ecosystem, protecting environmental resources, preserving and promoting cultural and historical values, natural landscapes, and eco-friendly landscape preservation. These models have garnered significant interest from tourists.

the COVID-19 pandemic

Representatives of the leadership from the Department of Tourism of Da Nang city stated that, in addition to modern tourism products, the city is also focused on developing green tourism, community-based tourism, and agricultural tourism linked to the construction of new rural areas. These directions are seen as crucial in preserving and promoting the unique cultural aspects of the locality. Furthermore, they contribute to economic development, increase income for local residents, and create more tourism products that align with the preferences and trends of many domestic and international tourists.

Some community-based tourism and agricultural tourism models have already been established and put into operation, such as An Phu Farm, Banarita Glaping Farm, Nam Yen Valley Grape Garden, Yen Retreat camping site, Mother Ken Farm, and Thai Lai Ecotourism Village (Hoa Nhon).

However, certain community-based and agricultural tourism areas are still in the initial stages of development and have not been fully completed, making it difficult to evaluate their quality. The existing service activities in these areas currently only attract and meet the demands of domestic and regional tourists.

The Department of Tourism of Da Nang city suggests that localities need to have comprehensive planning and development strategies for green tourism. This includes developing accommodation facilities in conjunction with services in rural tourism areas, craft villages, agriculture, and high-tech agriculture. For Da Nang city, there are plans to develop green tourism products and tourism combined with agricultural production in areas such as Hoa Vang, Lien Chieu, Son Tra, Cam Le, and Ngu Hanh Son in the near future.

In Thua Thien Hue province, the tourism industry and localities have been actively supporting the formation and development of many tourist attractions, products, and tours. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, the Director of the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province, from 2018 to the present, there have been 15 tourist destinations officially recognized as provincial-level tourist attractions, including 12 ecological and community-based tourism sites, such as garden houses, Thanh Toan Tile Bridge, Chuon Lagoon, and Tam Giang estuary.

“Hue has a solid foundation for developing green tourism. Besides the ancient charm of tombs, temples, and the vast cultural heritage system, the city also features an environmentally friendly landscape right in the heart of the urban area. Green trees and parks are well-distributed throughout the city, along the rivers, leaving a strong impression on tourists. Additionally, in Hue, people do not need to worry much about air quality, which is always ensured. This partly confirms that Hue deserves to be known as Vietnam’s green city,” stated the Director of the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province.

To further promote the development of green tourism, the tourism industry in Thua Thien Hue province proposed that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism should establish and issue “Green Tourism Criteria” for hotels, homestays, resorts, travel services, and tourist attractions applicable nationwide. Based on these criteria, management agencies and tourism businesses can apply them during investment, planning, and operations.

Moreover, these criteria will serve as a basis for recognizing green tourism products such as “green tours,” “green hotels,” “green restaurants,” and “green resorts” to facilitate easy recognition and registration for tourists.

During the workshop, various presentations and opinions from different entities were exchanged, proposing solutions to enhance the interlinkage of developing green tourism products. They also shared techniques and experiences in building sustainable green tourism product and service models, discussed environmental protection measures, and raised awareness among local communities in preserving the natural environment.
